Ok, so here we are talking about toilets. Yes, toilets of all things. It is somewhere where we all go when nature calls. There is a common misconception that toilets are just supposed to smell nasty. After all, people are not exactly dropping rose petals down there, right? Wrong.
Toilets can smell pleasant, and the good thing to know is that is does not take much effort either!
Common reasons your toilet will smell.
Someone has left their business down the pan.
It is more frequent with children, but it happens to fully-grown adults too. They go to the loo, do their business, and flush the loo. But they have left a present around the inside of the pan which will sit there and fester until the next person goes in the toilet.
The toilet brush holder.
Quite overlooked by people – the toilet brush holder. You must remember that its sole job is to wipe out the pan and scrub off those skid marks. It is therefore natural for the brush to build up with gunk and germs and sit there smelling.
A little tip from us is to fill your toilet brush bowl with fragranced disinfectant. Not only will the brush then stay disinfected, but the room should have a lingering pleasant odour also. Please do not do this if you have pets around though for obvious reasons.
They missed the target.
It is common for men to miss the target when going for a wee. Quite often the spillage is just on the seat, but remember when it hits the seat, those micro-splashes go on the outside of the cistern, on the floor and other spaces near to the toilet seat. You may find you are dealing with a toddler, in which they may not yet have refined their aim and wee over the floor directly.
Always keep your floor clean and sanitised. Not only does it prevent it becoming a breeding ground for germs, but it is also extremely good for keeping the toilet smelling fresh.
The inside of the cistern.
It is rare for anyone to open the cistern to look inside, but over time you do get a build up of mould and germs naturally. It is therefore important that occasionally you open the cistern and give it a very good deep clean.
The waste pipes.
Another reason a toilet may be because of the waste pipes. Often your waste pipes are connected to the soil stack, for which other things like your sink also run in to. If you have a slight blockage of gunk sitting in the soil stack or pipes, that smell can travel up the pipes, out of your plug hole and make the toilet or bathroom smell. If you suspect a small blockage in the toilet that may be causing a smell it is a good idea to find a pipe unblocker to dislodge and clean those pipes.
How to make your toilet smell amazing!
Ok, so we explained why the toilet may be smelling, but how can you flip that, so your toilet smells amazing? We have compiled some of our favourite methods for ensuring a toilet that smells fit for the Queen.
Regular Cleaning
This may sound like a no-brainer, but seriously – it is amazing how many people go to the toilet without cleaning it. Teaching your whole family simple processes after using the loo can make a huge difference. Antibacterial wipes can be left by the toilet to wipe the toilet seat down after use for example.
Using Toilet Drops
This is our favourite way of always ensuring a gorgeous smelling toilet. We often use Asevi concentrated air freshener drops (also known as Asevi toilet drops) after flushing the loo.
Just simply open the lid, squeeze out the liquid around the pan and simply leave it to work its magic.
Within a minute or two, your whole toilet will be smelling amazing, and the beauty is that it lasts for ages too.
Toilet drops are quite unique – since all you need to do is squirt a little around the pan and the drops will run down into the water. Once it hits the water it floats on the surface which ensures the longevity of the fragrance in your toilet. They are ‘must have’ if you are hosting friends or family.
Put a diffusor on the shelf.
This is another way to ensure the toilet and bathroom are smelling amazing. A decent reed diffusor usually lasts at least a few weeks, so this works out as another cheap and cheerful way of ensuring your bathroom always smells good.
